Blatche, Thornton help Wizards beat Bulls
Basketball Betting Lines
02/22/2010 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Andray Blatche poured in 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, as the Washington Wizards fended off the Chicago Bulls, 101-95, at the Verizon Center.
Al Thornton added 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Wizards, who have won three of four. Randy Foye tallied 16 points and nine assists for Washington, which started a three-game homestand on Monday.
The news was not all good for the Wizards, who lost forward Josh Howard early in the first quarter to a left knee sprain. Washington acquired Howard from Dallas last week in a seven-player deal that sent forward Caron Butler to the Mavericks.
Derrick Rose finished with 22 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Bulls, who had a four-game win streak come to an end. Flip Murray donated 16 points off the bench for Chicago, which got 11 points and six boards from Luol Deng.
Ahead 81-76 two minutes into the fourth, Washington put together a 12-4 flurry to create some breathing room. Blatche ended the spurt with a pair of free throws to make it a 93-80 game with less than 5 1/2 minutes to play.
Chicago responded with a 15-3 burst to cut the gap to one. Rose tallied nine points during the run, which Murray capped with a three-pointer to make it 96-95 with under two minutes to go.
Thornton stopped the bleeding with a fadeaway jumper in the lane to give the Wizards a three-point edge. At the opposite end of the floor, Deng missed a jumper.
Foye then made an 18-foot jumper with 1:01 remaining, extending Washington's margin to 100-95.
There was 26.4 seconds left on the clock following a missed Brad Miller trey and a shot clock violation on the Wizards. Murray and Rose each missed shots from beyond the arc, and James Singleton made 1-of-2 from the foul line to seal the victory.
The Bulls, who held a 26-25 edge after 12 minutes, trailed 31-30 early in the second. An ensuing 20-7 run by Chicago, though, put them in front by 12. Hakim Warrick's layup made it 50-38 with 4 1/2 minutes left. The score was 56-46 at the break.
The Wizards started the third on a 22-6 burst to take the lead. Thornton scored seven points during the run, including a three-pointer to put Washington in front 68-62 with three minutes remaining. The Wizards held a 77-72 edge after three periods.

Teams that should be in: Michigan State, Indiana
Work left to do: Illinois, Purdue, Michigan, Iowa
Behind the big two, the pecking order might be in a bit of flux. Has Michigan State passed Indiana after handling the Hoosiers in East Lansing? Where is Illinois in that mix? What looked like a four-big league last week could be morphing into five -- and even six is not unthinkable at this point if everything breaks right.
Should be in:
Michigan State [21-8 (8-6), RPI: 20, SOS: 15] The Spartans made it four-for-four on the homestand, a gigantic accomplishment that leaves them in extremely good shape. MSU is only 1-6 on the road and is at Michigan and at Wisconsin to close things out, meaning the date with the Wolverines on Tuesday looms very, very large. Beating Texas early will hold up well, as will the rout of Bradley and the win over BYU, but will 8-8 be enough? It very well could be, as the computer numbers are good, but why chance it?
Indiana [18-9 (8-6), RPI: 24, SOS: 32] Hmm ... good thing the last two are at Northwestern and home to Penn State, because IU might want to get both to feel completely safe after dropping its third in the last four, fading after halftime at Michigan State. Who knew the best nonconference win would be over Southern Illinois, which is a gift that keeps on giving for the Hoosiers. The win over Wisconsin also looks good on the mantel.
Work left to do:
Illinois [21-9 (9-6), RPI: 31, SOS: 25] A good performance at Penn State leaves the Illini in pretty good shape. Can they go to Iowa and take care of business to really look on their way? That's a huge game, as there is a possible cluster of teams that will end at 9-7. Illinois beat Bradley, but has lost to Xavier. A 9-7 mark and a semifinals trip in Chicago could be enough with the computer profile hanging in there, but it would be better not to mess around, clinching at least a tie for third.
Purdue [18-10 (7-7), RPI: 47, SOS: 28] Couldn't get it done at Iowa, but did win at Northwestern to put 9-7 squarely in sight. Where does that leave the Boilermakers, though? Even if they beat Minnesota and Northwestern at home, that won't help the computer numbers. Nonconference wins over Virginia, DePaul and Oklahoma are solid, but not spectacular. The Boilers very well might need an upset in the B10 quarters to have a legit claim.
Michigan [19-10 (7-7), RPI: 55, SOS: 53] Well, Michigan did what it needed to do, winning at Minnesota to take control of its fate. The Wolverines have Michigan State and an already-wrapped-up-the-league Ohio State at home to close, so the chances are there. Win both and we can talk. There is no marquee win yet in the profile, and the Wolverines were splattered in several games against name opponents. A mediocre computer profile fueled by a lack of road wins isn't helping, either.
Iowa [16-12 (8-6), RPI: 80, SOS: 64] For the sake of being complete, we'll add Iowa, this season's Stanford. It's plausible that the Hawkeyes could get to 10-6 (at Penn State, vs. Illinois left), but where does that leave them after a gruesome nonconference performance where the best win was over ... Toledo? Iowa State? Cornell?? If they get to 10-6, we can start to look at what they need to do in the B10 tourney, although my gut sense is that they would need to make the final and have knocked off Ohio State or Wisconsin on the way to have any real claim.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
